Mecca Girl music video was ‘not a problem’ for Saudi female rapper Asayel Slay. The Saudi Arabian female rapper behind music video Mecca Girl, which went viral on YouTube last month, has denied being detained by authorities.

Asayel Al-Bishi was reported to have been arrested after the video, which featured shorts of young girls and boys dancing to her song, was taken down from the social platform.

Instead the rapper claimed she was merely questioned for failing to secure the right permits to shoot the production, she told Al Arabiya English.

Al-Bishi said she was unaware that she required a permit to shoot the music video, which garnered thousands of views on YouTube and social media platform Instagram, adding that the public prosecution assured her that the video itself was “not a problem”.

The rapper said the song gathered mixed reviews but that is planning to write more songs and shoot more videos.

Saudi Arabia has seen a string of female rappers emerge onto its music scene since the relaxing of social restrictions against women in the conservative kingdom.

In June 2018, following the lifting of the female driving ban, Saudi rapper ‘Leesa’ released a music video of her rapping at the wheel of a car.

“I don’t need anyone to take me… Drivers’ license with me,” she rapped as she sat in the driver’s seat.
